Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss: My journey, at home, naturally!

I’ve seen mothers struggling for post-pregnancy weight loss. Trying all possible means, from walks, jogs, fad-diets to yoga and gym, the results can sometimes be not so comforting. With taking care of the newborn baby, feeding every now and then, preparing meals, shopping, doing a thousand household chores along with sleep deprivation and constantly tired body, the chances of taking out the time to self-heal is a challenge.

During and after pregnancy, a mother’s body goes through a tremendous change. I’ve been there, I understand the difficulties of this phase. My back ached, my knees hurt badly. I never had much free time anyway, but I could not ignore the self-consciousness I had developed over the time majorly due to acne and weight gain. I tried reaching out to the doctors, both the best in their respective fields, only to understand that exercise and medicine were suggested to be avoided for 4-6 months after a C-section and also for a breastfeeding mom.

That led me to find alternative ways to help myself, that were natural and did not require much physical effort either. Before saying more about Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss, let me give you an insight into my pregnancy first.

My Pregnancy Journey

In the 7th week of my pregnancy, I was hospitalized due to internal bleeding, with high chances of miscarriage. Thankfully, we recovered, but I was suggested complete bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy, with legs kept a bit higher than the body level. And with this began my weekly dose of hormone vaccines and tablets, until the last trimester. I faced severe morning sickness in the 1st trimester, living only on bananas and Glucose biscuits.

  • Fun Fact: Bananas are believed to help with morning sickness during pregnancy. For more information, CLICK HERE.

The 2nd and the last trimester were mostly good, with hormone medication and bed rest continued.

During the last trimester, I was given Iron Infusion thrice to recover HB levels, as my body had stopped accepting iron through oral intake (both medicine and natural food sources like apple, pomegranate and green leafy vegetables).

My Post-Pregnancy Journey

Once we were back home with the baby, the general body-aches and weakness remained. But what caused me more discomfort was pain in the knees, shoulders and backbone. At the completion of 3 months, I consulted a doctor (Pain Management Specialist at W-Pratiksha, Gurgaon). According to him, the after-delivery pains happened mainly due to inability of the muscles to recover back, and hence, starting a few light movements might help.

Accept Yourself

It’s unimaginable for anyone but a mother to understand the hardships she has been through, and your body has been your constant companion in this journey. Therefore, your body has every right to be accepted, thanked, appreciated and loved. Pamper yourself every possible way, show gratitude towards it. Love yourself.

Lukewarm Water

Ever since I conceived, my doctor advised me to drink lukewarm water only, as it aids in keeping a good digestive system. And till today, I continue to do so. It,

But there was a slight change my doctor suggested we made after delivery. The water I drank was boiled with any or all 4 ingredients mentioned below:

  • Saunf (fennel)
  • Jeera (Cumin)
  • Dalchini (Cinnamon)
  • Elaichi (Cardamom)

This helped with milk supply, as well as overall weight reduction. Once I resumed work after my maternity leave, I found a different way out. I prepared my MAGIC TEA and consumed it twice daily. You can check out all the details of the magic tea HERE.

Regular Meals

Never ever skip your meals. Eat all traditional food items your moms and grand moms had. When you eat regular meals, the body gets its required nutrition and energy needs, and avoids storing it in your body for future. This also leads to a better metabolism. Also, have a rich and balanced diet, and preferably at fixed times with short intervals.

Junk Food

I’d be lying if I said I completely avoided junk food. But yes, I limited my junk food/outside food intake to maximum once a week.

Surya Namaskar

Surya Namaskar was my savior. I started with 2 rounds of Surya Namaskar for 2 weeks at 5.5 months after delivery. After 2 weeks, I added another round for a week. At week 4, I was doing 4 rounds easily in 10-15 minutes. It helped me in 5 ways:

  • Regaining flexibility and fitness
  • Recovering general body aches
  • Recovering knee, shoulder and backbone pain
  • Overall weight loss
  • A natural radiant skin

I continued this routine for 3 and a half months. When my son was 8 months old, I had reduced a lot, and was back to my pre-pregnancy weight of 53 kg from 67+ kg. 😊
